Mizzoumn
Hi, I'm looking into the possibility of doing a fishing trip in ontario with a large group of friends. We are looking at the Seine River chain of lakes right by Atikokan. Has anyone ever fished there or know anything about it? We plan on going up the last full week of May. Also if anyone knows of any other places in ontario where you are able to camp and rent boats I would appreciate any help. Thanks
JeziHogg
If your going to head up that way, why not just go to Lake of the Woods?
Super User Scott F Posted January 12, 2014 Super User Share Posted January 12, 2014 What are you going to be fishing for? I'm not familiar with the particular body area you are asking about but I assume because you are on a bass fishing web site, bass will be your primary target. Few locals fish for bass, so there will be little to no pressure on smallmouth. The end of May can be very tricky for bass depending on when ice out is. In my experience in that part of the world, you need water temps of at least 50 degrees for the smallmouth to become active. Largemouth will start biting consistently at 55 degrees. Last year, the lakes were still frozen around May 20 and it was near June 1 when the water hit 50. The colder water is great for pike and walleye but it's a long drive to chance having bad weather ruin your trip. You could hit it perfectly for pre-spawn bass action or, you could struggle. Moving your trip a week or 2 later should increase your chances of better fishing.

Thanks If you're looking to chase big pike, this is about the right time to be going but for bass, as Scott F says, it's probably a few weeks too early. Tim Kelly
I don't think bass season opens until the second or third week of June anyway in Ontario?
Super User MarkH024 Posted January 13, 2014 Super User Share Posted January 13, 2014 I don't think bass season opens until the second or third week of June anyway in Ontario? Not certain about the bass season but musky I know is the 3rd weekend of June always. So count that out if you stick to your scheduled date. Last time I went to Eagle Lake in 2010, we were there the 3rd weekend of June for musky and the smallies were protecting fry and there was a mayfly hatch in full strength. Ice out was pretty early that year. Make sure you keep up with reports and especially ice out information. That is going to definitely tell you how the fishing will be. Eagle Lake is an awesome place with a ton of lodges. I don't know about renting and camping though. I've never been in that situation myself. Mizzoumn
Thanks for all the responses. Though I primarily fish for bass, I also enjoy walleye and pike fishing. So if it's too early for the smallmouth it shouldn't be too big of deal as long as walleye and pike are biting at that time.
DFrench97
There are many prize lakes in Canada! Check out the Kawarthas. You could hit many lakes in a week and fish large mouth and small mouth.
