I like throwing 1/2 oz. lipless cranks for wipers, but all too often the larger fish bend them out. Has anybody replaced their trebles on lipless cranks? I'd like to beef them up without affecting the action of the lure while slow rolling.

As far a sizes are concerned I typically have seen the following combinations on 1/2 oz lipless cranks:

#6 both belly and rear

#4 belly and #6 rear

#4 both belly and rear

#2 belly and #4 rear

#2 both belly and rear (this combo works on most lipless cranks anyway)

Yup....those Mustads are what I use too. #4's on 1/2 oz baits.

Those are 1X hooks and I'd recommend 3X (2X in the Mustads) if you're having issues with the hooks straightening.

I personally use Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp 3X when fishing lipless cranks with braided line.

Thanks Joe, I'll give the 2x mustads a look. It's always after a few wipers in the 6-10 lb range that my hooks bend out, and I'm not even throwing braid! More like 12 lb. mono!

I fish those 1x Mustad KVD's on braid, it takes some doing to bend them. There is really no need to go up to a 2x or 3x strong. I have used the Lazer Sharp 3x hooks your talking about, and they bend and flex easier than the Mustad 1x.

I'll agree 100% with ww2farmer, the KVD 1X strong 2X short Triple Grips are very good trebles and I wouldn't worry about bending them. Especially with 12# mono. I use #2's on all my 1/2oz lipless baits and 1.5 squarebills. Doesn't effect the action of either of these baits. Nothing wrong with using #4's I just prefer the bigger hooks since they can easily be used without any negative consequences for the lures.

It sounds like those KVD 1x strong 2x short triple grips in #2 are the deal for my 1/2 oz. BPS Rattle Shads. 90% of my hookups come on the first treble so I may just replace the front and leave the back stock. Thanks for the feedback guys!

Normally I use owner needle points on crankbaits or gammys... I just don't like cutting points for crankbaits... Tears big holes in fish but on lipless I agree with ww2farmer mustad triple grips are a strong treble and it holds very, very well they are strong and stay sharp! Good luck

KVD trebles are money, well designed hook.

The 1/2 oz lipless on the left has stock trebles, and the one on the right has the 2x short 1x strong KVD Mustad #2 on front, with the stock front hook moved to the back (I'm guessing its a #4). I'm happy with it, thanks for the feedback guys.
