I will be moving to the Conroe area from the Northeast in a few weeks. Im looking to gather some info and/or tips on the lake?

Hows the fishing this time of year? Spring? Summer?

Im planning on getting Navionics chip to help out.

Welcome to Texas! About Conroe I don't know a whole lot seeing as how I don't have a boat so that makes fishing it a little difficult. Although there's a small lake in a Huntsville State Park called Lake Raven I've heard is really good. I used to work at Gander Mtn and I had a repeat customer come in every month rantin and ravin about how big the bass are there (using black worms). Beware of gators though. I myself haven't made the long trek up there to fish it from either of the two fishing piers they have there.

Back to your original question Conroe sure looks fishy, in a good way, from what I've seen a lot of trees that jut out out of the water and under it. There are 1-2 bridges that go across the lake and I've heard the north bridge is usually a good place in spring/ early summer. Ask anything else I'll do my best to help you out.

I appreciate the info Slefler and Catt. I'm looking forward to catching some nice southern toads. 

 

I also plan on fishing tournaments every week on Conroe, Sam Rayburn, Houston, Livingston, or Toledo Bend. Are any of you involved in tournaments on these bodies of water? I've fished a good bit of tournaments up here in the northeast but never down as far as Texas.

 

I think one tournament on Conroe is the Oakley Big bass?... and also the Angler's Quest seems to have a solid tournament just about every weekend. 

On the topic of tournaments I personally have zero experience/advice.  I've fished since before I could walk but it was always crappie fishing.  Last year I was bit by the "Bass fishing bug" so I'm still trying to learn just about everything lol.  All I can say about Conroe is that it can get VERY choppy. I was on a friends pontoon boat last year and the waves were crashing over the bow. 

 

If you'd like a fishing buddy PM me, I'd be more than happy to trade tips or techniques (probably not tell you anything you don't already know) with you as well as split the cost of gas lol. 

Conroe has turned into a "party lake"... your best chance for reasonable fishing is the north end... ditto on lake raven at Huntsville state park.... small, but dynamite bass fishing,,, catch and release only though. it's also a "no wake " lake and it is inforced... but its a great bass lake.. also very nice campgrounds there.

All the different coves at Raven scream "Fish me!" with all the lilly pads everywhere you turn.  I've also heard that about Conroe.

About it being a "Party" lake that is.

Conroe does have some recreational traffic but the bass are still there, it has produced a few doyble digit bass & a couple Share-A-Lunkers.

As for tournaments it depends on your skill level, Bass Champs, Bass-N-Bucks, Texas Team Trail have some of the best anglers the side of the Pro Tour. I would start at the local level & work upwards from there.

As mentioned this lakes can be extremely hazardous if one is not experenced with choppy water & timber. I've seen many guys from out of state shocked on our waterways. We have to follow marked boatlanes which means ya aint always headed in the safest direction.

The 8 pound bass I'm holding in my picture to the left is from Raven. We have caught multiple 8-pounders out of Raven. It is relatively close to Lake Conroe and I highly suggest going there as much as possible!

On Lake Conroe, go to the stumps in Peach Creek. Also go to Walden Marina, Stow-A-Way Marina and Palms Marina. You can almost always find bass in the marinas, along the walls. The vast majority of bass you will catch will be dinks (1-3 pounds). 

 

I promise you though, Lake Raven, in Hunstville State Park, is a treasure trove. Small lake with tons of 6,7 and 8 pound bass!

I'm a little late to this post, I just found out about this site. Conroe can be very humbling..... TPWD put grass carp in years ago to turn into a more friendly recreation lake. The fishing can be great at times weekdays are the best. Boat docks are very popular the ones with deep water are better. I've caught some good fish around rip rap north and south end. Seven coves bass club is the largest in the area, there are several others as well. Stowaway has a friendly Sunday tourney and April plaza has Tues and Thurs night touneys 6-9 pm 3 fish, around 15 lbs will win it most of the time. I'm out there quite a bit hope you had a good year out there
