I' m overhauling a few Penn Fierce Spinning reels and was would like to know if I should grease or oil the upper and lower pinion bearings and the main gear bearings. From what I've read, most say oil the bearings and grease the gears. On Alan Tani's site he says he packs all bearings with grease. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yeah you need a packer to do that.  I don't bother and if your bearings feel rough when dry you should replace them.  Since the bearings in a spinner have everything to do with smoothness and nothing to do with casting, use a heavy oil. I soak them for a bit in Rocket Fuel's Liquid Grease of Phil's Tenacious Oil.

Your reading about baitcasting reels.

 

In spinning service I use a little heavier oil and grease especially for reels used in salty conditions. I don't pack the bearings they are oiled and just a cover coating will keep most all moisture out..Baitcasting reels get very light bearing oils, and grease is used sparingly (gears only)....

What is a good heavy oil? Is the Rocket Fuel Liquid Grease 0119 referenced a heavy oil? Are you cover coating the bearings with grease?

Its a thicker viscosity than typical. Good for shafts, spinning reels, cog wheels, levelwinds. I allow it a bit of soaking time with a couple drops of oil before i install it. It has worked for the 20 years of inshore fishing and yak fishing.
