What Hook For A 4 Inch Paddle Tail Minnow?

Featured Replies

Ok I've got a dumb question. Finally found some big four inch soft plastic paddle tail minnows locally. ( yay sexy shad to) But soon as I got them home it hit me. I don't have a jig head with a hook big enough, long enough.

After looking them over I'm clueless as to the best way to rig them. Being the body is so tall and long.

I use a plain jig head for the smaller ones. But these would need a Long shank hook of some sort. Any ideas?

I throw the paddle tail fluke style baits on a weighted swim bait hook 3/0 for the smaller 5/0 for the bigger ones

I tried threading a weighted wide gap hook I had threw it. But it wasn't very pretty. Lol

You don't thread it thru lol

Take the point of the hook poke it thru just like you were going to Texas rig it back it back out push the eye thru the belly back up thru te channel you made tie it on then rig it like normal and you are good to go

I've got a buddy that's a cheap azz he buys a pack of the biggest swivels he can find threads the hook thru the head of the bait then slips both ends of the swivel over a wide gap hook to weight it then finishes rigging t

I measured one. There exactly one inch tall. To much for a five oo. I think. The belly doesn't have the slit like other baits. So that's a lot of plastic for the hook to push threw. I think it would be better for the hook to protrude above it?

If they make a jig head with a hook an 1 1/2 long, they would work fine.

I seen some in six inch on line to. I'd order some If I could find the rite hook for them. For them big ole greedy prespawn girls. :D

Lot cheaper then the big swim baits.

For a 3.5" to 4" paddle tail minnow like the Gene Larew Sweet Swimmer of the Keitech Easy Shiner a swim bait head in the 1/8oz to 1/4oz with a 3/0 hook works great.

Did a quick search for swim bait heads. Yep that will work.

As big a town as I live in and as much water as we have. It's a shame such a thing like a swim bait is still new to me.

Man I wish they would build something big here. We finally got a Dicks here but they have more soccer balls then fishing lures.

I use these with swimbaits and flukes. Rig like Wbeadlescomb said and your good to go. Most walmarts have them down here.

Use a screw lock weighted swim bait hook 5/0.  Also try hooking it horizontally rather than vertically. Less plastic to push the hook thru that way.
