How do you change the knobs on shimano reels? Say, for example, I would like the add the larger "septon" grips from a curado 200E7 and put them on a citica 200E or a curado 50E?

 

Can someone walk me through the process both removing the old grips and adding the new ones?

On the Curado 50 you pop out the hard plastic endcaps on the grips.  Use a small screwdriver to remove the screw that is under the cap.  Pull off grips.  Get the bearings/bushings all sorted out and back on the shaft.  Slide new grips on and replace the screws and caps.

 

Citica E's knobs are riveted on so no way to swap those.  Got to go the whole handle assembly route.

You can buy a Curado handle assembly for around $30, it comes with knobs.  

Be careful, some of those shimano screw knobs are left handed threads.

Not all of them are. A Curado 50E has standard threads. I bought a CTE100GT handle from Shimano a while back and it also had standard threads.

 

To the op, if you remove the knobs on your 50E, make sure you don't loose that little tiny brass washer.

 

Also,  If you are ordering knobs from Shimano, you might as well order 2 more knob bearings to replace the bushing in each 50E knob.

I can't help you with the swap-out, but I would caution you on the septon knobs. I picked up a second-hand Shimano Stradic 1000fi a few months ago. Great reel, but I noticed that the handle was starting to get sticky. Same thing happened with my old Sedona. I googled and found a LONG thread about people having issues with the septon knobs used on a certain generation of Shimano reels. Several of the replies came from a Shimano representative and the gist was the company acknowledged septon breakdown due to exposure to certain types of sunscreen and mosquito repellant (my Sedona started having knob issues after some Off! mist got on it one day). Certain weather and humidity conditions were also cited. Not surprisingly, no replacements were offered by the rep.

I didn't see any reason to pile on, so I just bought a pair of Reel Grips and stuck one on the Stradic knob. Problem solved.

I've done this I recommend adding bearings with the new grips.
