Line Choices

Featured Replies

I never really liked Braid, used only mono for years but in the last couple years switched to fluoro. I like the strength and durability of it.

Ive got 3 baitcasters and one spinning rig. Trying to decide what line to put on what reels/ rods. Thinking Mono for the spinning gear but the baitcasters I am not sure if I shoud try braid on any of them or just go Fluoro on all.

Ive also been seeing and reading about more people using braid backing but not sure how long the fluoro leaders would be. 6 feet or 75 yards? Not sure what to do. Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tom

I use fluoro on all my setups. I'm gonna give braid a try this season on my spinning reel, but I'll stick to fluoro on my baitcasters. I keep an extra spool of mono in my bag for when I throw a topwater bait, which isnt too often.

Braid all the way on spinning. Trust me you will never look back. 3'-6' of fluoro leader. I have one spinning setup with McCoys MEan Green that I use for light crankbaits. Some great braids for spinning reels are Berkly Nanofill (12lb test), Tuf Line Supercast, and of course Power Pro. If you go this route let me know, I have some knot advice for your leader.

For baitcasters, I have noticed that with the more experience I get under my belt the more braid I am using. I still have my moments with braid on my casting gear where I get frustrated and feel like a complete novice. I would still say that only 30% of my Baitcasters are braid, the rest are fluoro.

You need to consider type of fishing you will be doing. Google "Bassfishin Line Guide" This website does a pretty good job of telling you what to use what for. I dont follow it for everything but its a good place to start until you get a feel on what to use what for.

Let's hear the knot advice...

Thank you Nathan. I am going to try braid on my spinning gear with a fluoro leader and srick to fluoro on my baitcasters. Thanks for the advice and website info. PM me your knot reccomendations.

Thanks!

Once you get used to braid and realize the versatility you have with it the more you'll appreciate it (at least in my opinion) I use braid on every rod i own except for my cranking stick. just tie on leaders and you are ready to cover any situation you may encounter to measure my leaders I tie an alberto knot and then crank till my knot is just above the line guide on your reel then cut it and tie on your bait i use power pro and recently am starting to switch to sunline sx1 and fx2 this line is great and will be what I get when its time to respool. Thats another thing braid lasts extremely long and when you need to change it you just pull it all out and reverse the line because it has no memory

I hated braid the first time I used it, but I found myself wanting it again about a month later so I went out and bought some more (different brand though). I love it now. Just keep on using it and you will learn to cope with the cons of braid.

I used to hate braid, so I stopped using it. Decided to give it a try again last year....still hate it. The lack of stretch is nice, but I really couldn't find anything else I liked about it. I've always been a mono fan, but I have switched to mostly fluoro on my setups. I have 8lb Tatsu or Sniper on my spinning reels, my weightless plastic baitcasters have 10lb and 12lb Sunline Shooter, my jig rods have 15lb Tatsu, and my moving bait rods all have 13lb ,15lb, or 19lb mono depending on the bait.
