Small Outboards

Featured Replies

In the market for a small outboard but don't want to spend too much I'm looking to power a tracker 1542 it's max rating is 25 horsepower what would you guys be looking at I was thinking maybe a gamefisher I've heard they were made by mercury and are pretty cheap

Gamefisher outboards are made by whichever company would produce an outboard for the cheapest price for any particular year for Sears.

If you can find one in good working condition you should be OK.

BUT with Ethenol in fuel now, the rubber parts may not be suitable for it.

How is it finding parts on them? I heard that may be an issue

Not sure how they could be made by Mercury, I don't think mercury even makes it's own small engines.

I'm sorry, but you couldn't give me a Gamefisher. Buy a motor because it's cheap, could be the most expensive motor you will ever buy. Poor quality, worn out, no longer stocked parts, all kinds of things tend to bite you in the butt when you start buying off brands and cheap motors.

A couple of the Japan motors are pretty good motors, that's where the small Mercs use to come from, may still do, but then parts for some of those tend to be rather expensive. Stick big names Mercs, Johnnyrudes, Yama's Hondas, etc. Oh, and Force does not classify as a big brand either.

Evinrude 15 hp HO 35.2 cu.in./577 cc ;)

Its neat that it has power trim, but its really just a 25 with 15 stickers on it. Plus it only comes in a 20" shaft. I would still like to have one though.

What years did they make them

They are brand new, like $3700 or so I beleive. I have the same boat with a yamaha 9.9. If you are looking at new, I would check out the Suzuki 20hp. Its fuel injected and it only weighs 106lbs.

Oh nevermind I'm still in high school I'm looking for used

Look for a 80s or 90s Evinrude Johnson.  They are your best bet.  (I seem to give this advice often)
