I've noticed several threads on here asking the question, "Do you guys sharpen your hooks?" What I haven't noticed on here is anybody asking what people use to sharpen their hooks.

 

I just purchased an expensive new jerkbait and the trebles are duller than expected  and the bigger problem is that the jerkbait is perfectly balanced with these factory hooks, so I'm NOT going to replace them (please no suggestions to just buy new hooks).

 

My only thought so far is to buy a jewelry grade file and give the ends a few swipes. What do you guys use or suggest?

I use a hook sharpener, you can get one on tackle warehouse, bass pro, or a place like that.

Eze-lap model S or Rapala has a pretty good retractable stone.  Both are convenient to carry with you while fishing.

Send it back to the company and say the hooks are garbage and you are not happy. Most of the time they'll send a new one back

Thanks for the feedback guys. FWIW I just took the wife's nail file to them and was able to remove enough of the finish to get a good cutting point.

nevermind I saw that you didn't want to buy new hooks......... but my question is what are you going to do when you don't have anything else to file on? at some point you are going to have to get new hooks.

I messed up a few hoojs trying to find the right angle. I normally buy new hooks but im going try and sharpen them this year.

For a touch up while fishing I carry a diamond file, 1 st option is to replace the hooks.

I do use a mill file at home for my 12/0 limerick hooks.

I totally agree with that.....it is sad that companies dont use better stock hooks.
