When Will These Ponds Begin To Thaw??!!

Featured Replies

I am located on Long Island in  New York, and i've been waiting for the past 2.5 weeks for my fishing spots to un freeze, but it is taking longer than i expected. We had about five or six 60+ degree days within these 2.5 weeks and the rest were 50+ degrees and a few were under 40 or around 40. I go to check out my ponds and they are still frozen shut.... :( why does spring have to come late this year..? and even once the ponds unfreeze it'll take some time to heat that water up....

I looked into hiring a crop duster and buying a few tons of calcium chloride.....

I had to fly into Baltimore the other day, and everything from like N. Carolina, North, including all over Maryland and Virginia, were locked up from what I could see from the air. Suuuucks!

It's killing me too. We need a couple 70-80 degree days like we used to get in March...

Don't worry guys the bass will be spawning by July and the summer and fall pattern will last about two weeks so we should have about a month of good fishing! All kidding aside, it has been a tough year for us bass guys. Here in NJ it's been the same but a few weeks ago I realized that this isn't such a bad thing. In fact the weather has given me a chance to get things re-organized and work and I mean really put A TON of work into my cold water presentations. While I wish we had a few 65 degree days in a row I have decided to stop worrying about the things I can't change and adapt. Besides isn't that what separates the great fisherman from the good? Get out and work on things that you may not always get a chance to work on, expand your knowledge and skills and you may just surprise yourself and raise your confidence on the process.

Good luck and be safe...

Guess that's a good way to look at it.

It will all be fine. It was like this 3-4 years ago as well. Once the lakes unfreeze the temperature could go up very quickly depending on the weather. What is happening now will not necessarily affect what things will be like come end of April.

We actually have alot of open water here, but I am nowhere near ready to go.

alot of ponds on the south shore are already wide open.

yea thats a good sign, up here on the north shore the frozen still, not too bad anymore though its beginning to melt

wow you're asking for a lot haha all we need is 2 weeks straight of 60+ degree days and were pretty good to go

I'd love that, but it's looking like it won't happen until the middle of April.

Yea :(

nothings thawed out on the north shore yet ,even spot is still frozen solid

Everything is starting to thaw here, but most of the lakes are definitely still covered. I was fortunate to go try out some casts on Monday, but it was too d**n cold.

Here in Rhode Island most ponds are thawing out. Looks like spring will finally be sticking around, judging by the ten day forecast. I hope to get some casts in soon!
