Rod Power Question For Abu Garcia Veritas Owners

Featured Replies

I'm about to order an Abu Garcia Veritas Casting rod but I am not sure what power to order and do not have a store near me where I can try them out myself. I am deciding between the 6'6" MF and the 6'9" MHF. I want a shorter rod because this will be my travel rod. I heard that Abu Garcia rods are typically heavier than they are labeled.

I would be using this rod primarily to throw 1/2 oz jigs with the occasional lighter weight tube or t-rig. I really don't like it when my rod feels like a broomstick but I am worried that the 6'6" MF won't handle the 1/2 oz jigs as well since it is rated up to 5/8 oz and the 1/2 oz jig+trailer would be pushing that limit. Can anyone speak to the power and weight rating of these rods?

Thanks!

I own the 7'6 MH for frogs, with that, I would say you can go a little over the rating with a Veritas, but definitely not under. Personally between those two I would get the 6'6 because I feel like the MH would be a broomstick.

6'6'' MF, abu rods indeed are stiffer than rated, medium feels more like a medium heavy in my opinion and i know most people will agree with that. I use to own 2 Villain rods, now i just have the 7'1'' MH Villain for jigging, i got rid of the 7'1'' M because it was just too stiff for what i wanted it for, which with the help of these guys on here, i ended up replacing it with a Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth 6'10" MF. If you can move up on price a little, check those out, they arm beautiful, they also make 2 piece which could be handy for traveling.

I would go with the mh, esp if you're going to put trailers on the 1/2 jig. I think the m is really versatile but you are going to be throwing 1/2+ plastic the majority of the time if get the mh.

I own a 7 ft mh vendetta, 6'6" mh veracity, and 7' med veritas

These rods are not heavier but more like tip stiff! You would be fine with a Mh for what you want to use it for! They are nice rods! And they are on sale at Gander MTN. for $ 79.99 and you get a Hoodie on a mail -in-rebate.

I think either will work for what you want.  It is stiffer than most rods.  Go with your gut.  For smaller tubes and stuff, I would probably go with the M

I am worried that the MH will not be able to throw anything under 1/2 oz well and this may be the only rod I have with me on some trips. Have you tried throwing 1/2 oz + plastic on your 7' med Veritas? How does the rod load up when you are throwing it?

Haha thanks for the tip. I was actually the guy you were asking about the Fenwicks via PM. I really like the Fenwicks but I am looking for a casting 2 piece which severely limits my options. I've pretty much settled on a Veritas at this point.

I've thrown frogs and spooks on the med veritas, I think they're about 5/8

Haha i knew your name looked familiar!! Thanks again for the help, love the rod!!

Yea not too many choices on the 2 piece, good luck on the decision, let us know what you end up with!

i own a MH Veritas.  it is a very light rod.  i think the action is good.  the power rating to me seems closer to heavy...BUT i like that.  i throw anywhere from 1/4oz to 1/2oz on it with no problems.  i throw a lot of jigs on mine.   i would go with the MH.

I would go with the MH. I think you'll want that extra power in your back pocket. I have the 7' MH and it handles everything from weightless senkos to 3/4 oz jigs. I like the power that it has and sticking bass isn't an issue especially if your fishing baits on the bottom.

I've read comments about the broomstick feel but I think it's plenty sensitive enough. I wouldn't use it for crankbaits though. It works but I prefer more of that parabolic flex of a medium power rod.

I have both of the 2pc. rods with 2 of the MH. The MH will do what you want with lures from a 1/4oz up. Lighter than that, save yourself some money and get the 2pc. 6'6" Vengence. I like mine a lot for small lures, and it will handle 5lb. bass all day long.
