How many people here use a Powell spinning rod as their DS rig? How do you like it?

Do you prefer the Endurance or the Max?

Yup. I've caught bass in 35+ fow with these rods.

Awesome! I'm nervous about jumping in a purchasing a few without holding them for myself. Do you find the reel seat to be comfortable? All the rods I currently own have cork infront of the reel seat as well. So that would take some getting used to.

They have the same handle as the Dobyns I fish, and I love that handle/reel seat. It fits perfectly In your hand, and there is a nice blank spot for your finger to rest against the rod blank for even more sensitivity. Really comfortable. You will like it!

I'll second Powell, I run a Max Series 702, I use it for DS, shakey heads, or weightless senkos.  Little light for heavier drop shots but ultra sensitive and very comfortable.

My next Dobyns Dx is gonna be a M or ML spinning rod. They are terrific rods. Im super pleased with my DX. But for 150 bucks, Powell is the next best thing.

Powell Endurance 6103.  It is a little heavier action, but enough backbone to get a hook home at any depth.  Good luck!!

I was as well.  The only reel place to get your hands on a Powell on the Mid-Atlantic is say your buddies.  But, I have definitely increased my landing percentage since converting to Powell Endurances.  I have lost three fish in 2 years on Endurances.  One failure was old line, another was weak drag setting on the reel ( I hooked "Red October," and did not have the best drag working for that fish), and the last was just hey, he got off.  

 

I've never fished a Dobyns, and I am not going to get into the discussion.  But, the backbone on the Powell Endurance rods is outstanding!

Just the one DX. Got it on sale for a ham sandwich. Less than what u would pay for Champ.

I'm guessing it's probably better then an endurance. At least I'd hope so for the price difference but is it like night and day? I'm just curious as so many people are all about Dobyns these days and Powell's seem to be looked over in the rod market.

Adam, I'm not gonna say its night and day, but its clearly the better rod. In all categories, it surpasses the Powell... But like I said, the Powell hold its own well. I really need to try a champ series rod to see where I think the endurance stands

Yeah that would be the comparison I'd love to see. Considering the hand Gary Dobyns had in the development of the Powell's. I've heard both sides of the story on those two models but I'd like to hear it from someone who is neutral instead of omg omg Dobyns is the greatest.
