Late Spawn In Jersey?

Recommended Posts

This past or still winter has been brutal up here. I've been to different bodies of water and haven't seen any beds our bedding bass so they might be spawning later than usuall. Also saw some dead turtles and pumpkin seeds at one lake. Maybe somebody up this way can clarify this and is having the same issues. Did see plenty of perch chasing my jigs and Space Monkeys.

Dead pumpkinseeds probably = winterkill unfortunately. We just lost our ice about a week and a half ago so up here the spawn is still a ways off.

Water is still pretty cold. Most of the northern NJ lakes still had ice on them just 2 weeks ago. I was testing the shallows for bass on Sunday but came up empty there.  They haven't moved in yet, at least on that lake and I suspect most northern NJ lakes.

I grew up in northern NJ and remember catching bedding fish in late May/early June. I think you'll be fine. Water here in south pa is in the low 50's. Were on schedule.

I did have strike, but It spit the hook over on Pompton Lake. I have a write up about in the fishing report section

Here in New York things are still slow. They are starting to turn back on but on at specific lakes. Not all spots, many of them actually, aren't active. I have caught some fish though in the past week at this one spot that is active.

It isn't spawning season yet. You usually don't see beds in NJ or PA until middle of May on average. It is going to be warmer than average again next week, things will catch right back up to where they should be. It will just be a shorter pre-spawn fury. And the pre-spawn fury is on. We have been whacking them the last week or two.

In South NJ, As of last weekend, Fish were Pairing up, and smaller fish were on the move to the shallows. Monday alone the water moved from 64 - 72 degrees in the shallows places and we were putting a hurt on them.  the cold front that came through  early this week probably didn't help things to much Tuesday night the temps dropped to 26 degrees down here.

Right over the river here in Milford, PA is pretty much the same. Nothing in the shallows yet and the fish still seem to be holding in deeper waters yet. The surface temp on my lake this past Monday was 52°. Spawn is still probably a month away or so.

Sucks that I can't get to those staging bass in the deeper end, but that will change next year. I'll be ready when they hit the shallows.

I caught a bass in the shallows during that nice weather we had about a week ago, but, I think this recent cold front has brought it back down, I cant wait until I can start pulling fish out of the water again.

Might I suggest trolling a lipless crank about 50-60 feet behind the boat? That was what worked for me on Monday.
