Massachusetts Sucks...or Is It Like This Everywhere....

Recommended Posts

So i was going to put this in boating but its more relative to Massachusetts and figure i would find more help here.  I bought a boat and trailer 3 years ago..... Well i never registered the boat cause i didnt think you had to with only a electric trolling motor on it also never registered the trailer cause the lake i fished on was a block away.  I recently moved and have to travel a bit to the lakes.  I figured now was the time to register everything and get it straight.

I get to the DMV and the lady says i need the registration of the last person to register my trailer....its a tiny trailer.....  I was like well **** i bought it three years ago from a guy on craigslist, and he told me he had bought it a couple days earlier from someone else...  I had no clue what i needed for it and the guy told me the bill of sale would be enough.  Yeah right.....  No im stuck with a little SunDolphin pro 120 that i cant even use cause i cant register my trailer....

Any one else have this issue before, or anyone know of a loop whole..... Or was the lady at the DMV just clueless..?  My only thought is buying a new trailer, but i dont want to buy a trailer that will cause more then my boat and trailer combine is even worth....

Thanks for any help guys!!

I had to register mine in NH first because of the same thing. Now we do have a place there so it wasn't such a big deal. The problem was the DMV makes you sign an affidavit that says you will not take the trailer out of NH. I had a few trips to Ma that i made with that trailer that had me nervous.

When I did register it in Ma I had the registration from Nh so no big deal. They made me pay tax on it though.

You could just say it's home made. ask your insurance company to make up a slip and say the trailer is homemade and it cost you 100 or so to make it. Take the form to the DMV and you should be all set. Bingo Bango...

yes,  homemade trailer with no id on it.  In NH a homemade trailer needs to be inspected by a police officer (no big deal) then they will issue you a vin # for it so you can register it.   There is a way to do it in Mass i am sure.   Just have to follow the guidelines.   I am sure someone has dealt with this before,   you are not the first.  You shuld be able to call DMV or do a search online.  the answer is there on the Mass DMV site somewhere.   Might be a piass but can be done.

Take the numbers from the trailer and run them thru the RMV from the state the person lived in where you bought it, your insurance Company may be able to help you.  If the person lived in Ma, NH, chances are they'll still have a record of it. Yes, dealing with the RMV in Ma is a real PITA, but according to the registry chair person they're trying to change that image.  If you don't get any co-operation ask to speak to a supervior, be polite and diplomatic and you will usually get some results, if you act angry and aggressive than that's what your going to get back.  Good luck

OT, But a true story. I was into the old dual sport street legal dirtbikes. There so old they have no titles. In ct they won't accept the bill of sale. But vermont does. I have property there anyway. I registered everything that had lights. Now I'm at the DMV and was told that ct will accept the vt registration now.

I said bite me.

I purchased a European street legal two stroke bike and registered it in ct. I took it out at 12am and tore the streets up. I did wheelie on main st passed the Harley bar and the guys went nuts. I purchased the bike because a Leo said to me once while tuning my off road bike in front of my shop "I can see your an adult" like what are you trying to say Willis? I took 5k and purchased a street legal bike. I showed the neighborhood kids you can do it legal. But the midnight rides were awesome.

Funny my wife signed the cops pay checks in town she was the comptroller. I made sure I was legal. The leos would say my kids were awesome but the old man is something else.

Very simple solution. Go to the boat registration section of your local RMV. Tell them it's a homemade trailer. They will give you a form to send to Boston to obtain a new title for it. I've done this a couple of times with no problem. They will issue you a temp. registration that you can use until you get the new title from Boston.
