Prop Baits

Featured Replies

Whats the best retrieve for prop baits.Ive had some in the past, but really never knew how to properly fish them.

Is it just a steady retrieve or is it a Twitch, pause retrieve or a combination of both.

OR

Is it just one of those things that you have to experiment with and le the fish tell you what they want?

What about doctoring the prop?

Ive heard of bending the blades for more pitch,to create more disturbance/bubbles or taking it off, flipping it over and reinstalling

Anyone ever taken it off the back and installed it on the front?

What are everyones little tricks to these baits?

Depends on the type of prop bait. Heddon Torpedo needs some prop tuning to run right...

Twitch, pause has worked the best for me but if the topwater bite is hot, steady will work fine.

I have a LC Kelly J and a Deps buzzjet that I'm planning to using heavily this year.

Bending the prop towards the front will allow you work it slower almost like a popper. Just be carefull tho, I'm sure you know what happens when you keep bending aluminum back & forth.

LOL - yeah that will upset you. Snapping the blades off. :(

The best way to retrieve them is to experiment and let the fish tell you what and how they want.

Some props like the skitter prop will dive to about a foot creating a little bubble trail in the water which can be deadly. You can make that same prop walk a little by throwing slack in the line, but, again, like all have said here, let the fish tell you what they want.

Ive fished my Heddon Baby Torpedo with a straight retrieve, and it has put ALOT of fish in the boat. Just pulling it in striaght in. Maybe a pause or two every now and then but nothing too much. And yea, after about 25 fish caught on it, the blades bent pretty good and it wasnt bubbling like it was out of the package. I tried bending them back but...it jsut wasnt like it was right out of the box. So I jsut decided to go out and pick up another one. Its well worth it IMO. That Heddon Torpedo is one deadly topwater.. :(
