Do you use spoons for bass?

If so what color and size?

Sure do use spoons.  Over the years I've narrowed down to just a few that I use for bass.  At one time it was a Mepps cyclops, I don't use it anymore it spins too much and creates line twist.  I use a J-spoon sometimes but my 2 favorites are actually saltwater spoons, Clark spoons, single hook that cuts thru weeds pretty good like a J-spoon but doesn't rotate as much.  Numero uno spoon is a gold Redfish Key spoon made by Wahoo lures, I only use 1/4 oz.

For jigging, Hopkins Shorty and some other similar designs. Acme Kastmaster is another that can be jugged or casted. The old Johnson spoon is great in slop. I have a few others for weeds, but can't remember the name. They're made by Heddon and Northland tackle. I've caught a few smallies on Lil' Cleo, but I was casting for brown trout.

I'm starting to use them more & more in recent seasons. Ever since I read the article about them back a few years ago, in the In'Fisherman. I have about a doz. 5/8 oz. Tony Spoons, with clackers attached as such:

I actually prefer the gold to the silver. However, it's a tough call between spoons and blade baits. I've only targeted small mouth bass with them however. Both are jigged on/off the bottom. I find it more work to use the spoons as you have to keep it "going". Whereas with the blades, you do not have to be so aggressive. JMO. :)

I like that spoon and clacker rig. You're right about keeping a jigging spoon moving. I find it best if you can get a rhythm where you jerk the bait up just as it hits the bottom. Even though it's a vertical presentation, they really are similar to moving baits. Most times, I don't feel the fish until the jerk, which ends up being the hook set.

What about using spoons from the bank? not on a straight retrieve, more like a snap and flutter. Can it be effective? I have never fished a jigging spoon.

I have a small box full of Lake Fork flutter spoons; in light baitfish colors. Not a lot of fish caught on them, but all were very nice fish. No Dinks on that big spoon. I mostly fish this on deep structure, fished like a jig. Pull it up off the bottom and let it flutter back down on semi-tight line. Sometimes a sharp yank off the bottom works better than a slow pull. The key is to maintain contact as it drops. keep slack out of the line while the spoon is on the fall.

I also have a selection of small crocodile spoons that I bought for trout. They work nicely for smallmouth. A slow lift an drop, always moving retrieve has been the best I've discovered so foar.
