Chronarch 201E6 Makes Noise When Casting

Featured Replies

I recently picked up a used Chronarch 201E6.  For the first month or so of using it, it worked great, although I thought it should have cast a bit farther than it did.  I really liked it.  But this past weekend, it started making a noise, I'll call it a "clacking" for lack of a better term, when casting.  Usually just as line starts spooling out, for about half the cast distance.   It doesn't appear to affect the casting distance, or retrieve, either with or without a fish on, but it's not right.  Can anybody tell me if there is something simple to look at, or should I just send it in to Mike at DVT?

Thanks,

Dave

I am going to guess it is one of the spool brake shoes or the whole brake assembly is a bit lopsided.

1. Take off the sideplate.

2. Take out the spool.

3. Look at the spool from an angle where you can tell whether the brake assembly is crooked or not parallel to the spools outer edge.

4. If the whole brake piece isn't crooked, take a look at the brake shoes and see if anything looks messed up.

5. If 3 & 4 aren't the issue, look at the non-handle sideplate and see if anything on the brake race (metal ring around the inside of the palm sideplate) is odd.

6. If 3 & 4 & 5 aren't the issue, put a small amount of oil on the brake race.

Dry brakes can cause a squeal often misdiagnosed as bearing noise. Clacking noises are probably a little more involved but it's hard to say without seeing it. There's no harm in having a second hand reel gone through anyway. Email or call if you want to discuss other places to look for the noise.
