Bait Caster ?

Featured Replies

Thinking about throwing some braid on my bait casters. My question is if braid is harder to untangle than mono? I usually have no problem with mono if it back lashes and was wondering if braid was the same?

If you get a bad backlash with braid, you either need a line pic or you may have to cut some of the line from your spool... If you can cast mono it really shouldn't be a problem, put it on one setup first and experiment with it and if you like it than you can expand your horizons as far as braid is concerned.

I don't think removing a backlash with braid is any harder but if you do backlash, do not pull hard on the braid and when you put it on your reel, put it on as tight as you can get it.

I think mono can be harder sometimes. I find it harder to backlash braid than mono.

my experience is opposite of some peoples, iv never had a bad enough backlash in braid to pic or cut it out, but ive had several with mono and floro, the lowest i would go for braid is 30lb test braid, i use that for jus about all applications on my do-all St Croix LTB rod and Pflueger Summit reel

In my experience it is harder to backlash braid, and most of the time the line just wraps around 2 or 3 times and just stops. But if somehow you manage to get a really bad one, good luck picking it out. Probably will have to cut some. But it rarely happens, and as long as you aren't careless its nothing you should worry about.

When I bought my baitcaster last year I spooled it with some mono and went to practice. Every cast was a birds nest. Spooled up 50lb power pro and things got easier. I had an easier time picking the backlashes out when they did happen as well.

This year I picked up a third baitcaster and spooled it with 30lb power pro. When that thing backlashes it is a pain to pick out. I think it mostly boils down to line size, at lease for me it does.

You can always get a braid backlash out and the line is still good. I wouldn't say it's harder to get out cause you can pull on the loops and not worry about getting kinks in your line. I have never met a backlash I couldn't get out.

A small crochet hook are great to use for braid or mono backlash. Always have one with me.  Beats a jackknife.
