I have question that maybe you guys can help me with. I love fishing and  have done so off and on all my life. However I have absolutely no idea what I am doing. I never had any one who could really teach me and now I really want to learn but it can be a bit confusing.

 

So I went out and bought a rod and reel. I got a 6' Medium 6 -15 lb Rod. I also bought a 6.2:1 Reel. I bought this because every one suggested it. However I think I got this 5.1:1? Should I got with a Rod and Reel? Is this a good Rod and Reel combo to start off with? what are you're thoughts and opinions?

 

Any way an advice you guys could give would be great. Thank you.

I'm confused. So you have a 6:2 or 5:1 reel? Spinning or casting ? What type of fishing so you like to do? Senkos jigs spinnerbait etc etc. That will help get you some better advice.

I have a 6.2 Spinning. Primarily I will be bass fishing. As for Senkos Jigs Spinnerbait, well that's all Greek to me. I am till learning all this. However I think you're talking about rig setup in which case I am going to play around use them all but I will primarily use Texas Rig.

Welcome to BR and bass fishing. First thing i will recommend you do, is read the articles that BR provides. There a quite a few that i found helpful. Everything you can think of or need help in there is an article or video for. Take it step by step and you will start to get an understanding of our beloved sport. Many people will give you a lot of good advice on here. Take it slow, you try to take on everything and it can be overwhelming. Best of luck!!

I read on old article for a reel advertisement that said a 5.2 ratio was fast. Things have surely changed through the years.

I use a 5.2 ratio spinning reels mainly. I do have a 6.3 ratio spinning reel for burning spinnerbaits. In crank bait reels I use a 5.2 ratio. 6.3 ratio and a 7.1 ratio reels. Lure speed(line speed) is depending on how fast you turn the crank. When you want to burn a lure faster or not.

I maily use a 5.2 ratio reel. its a matter of personal choice. your 6.2 ratio is a good starting place.

I read about a 9.0 ratio too. I think the faster ratios are for the pros during a tournament when they get a strike and a miss they can get it back to the boat and recast faster?

If I had just one Combo I would opt for the faster reel. You can always slow it down.

For sure.

Especially with spinning gear the ratio is not as important as the inches per turn (IPT).  Unless you are fishing faster moving baits the ipt is not so critical, many bait types are fished slow, pause and jerk and jigged.  I personally move some lures with a gentle sweep of my arm and reel up the slack.  I could give examples of where a faster retrieve is beneficial, at this juncture it may be more information to digest than needed.
