my boater plans on "covering a lot of water with a lipless crankbait"

what would you recommend i throw?

i'm thinking maybe a lipless also and a spinnerbait   :-/

i would like for him to slow down to use a suspending jerkbait... but he usually fishes too fast for that  :'(

he said he "may slow down" and jig fish some too.

he's won our club 4 out of the past 5 years, so i'm kinda at his mercy....

appreciate any ideas/suggestions

If he is going to cover water I would go with a moving bait to keep up with him but different then what he is throwing. Maybe a regular crank, spinnerbait, chatterbait, or hollow bodied swimbait

A crank sounds right... Square bill or something depending on depth. Spinnerbait or chatterbait would be my second choice.

If he does slow down jerkbait and C-rig are your friends.

This time of year is awesome for a lipless crankbait.  If I was fishing behind a guy throwing a lipless, then I would tie on something like the Yo-Zuri Drum or the Excalibur One Knocker.  They both have different sounds than your typical lipless crankbaits and that can make a huge difference.  Also, if after a few hours neither of you have caught anything, try mixing up your retrieve.  A yo-yo'ed lipless crank can tear em up sometimes, especially with the water still cold.

Definitely want to be throwing something a little different... maybe go with a silent CB if clarity is good enough or a C-rig if you at least have enough time for it to drag the bottom before he's already in the next hole.

You have to play it by ear.  Sure, throw something different, but if he's nailing them, then you need to get your share as well - so tie on that bait!

Often, I did well looking to stick fish the boater missed, or drop shotting the deep side.  Just open your spool, and feed the drift some line to leave you bait in place.  Don't let it run out too far, though.
