Biffle Buggin' Larger Plastics

Featured Replies

I'm sure you guys have already made similar "modifications" to your buggin' tackle but I thought I'd share this little idea anyway. Most of the swinging jigheads come standard with the hook attached directly to the head which is fine for most of the medium sized craws and other plastics. Where I started having trouble was with larger plastics, specifically the Smokin' Rooster. Not that this bait is unusually thick, it isn't, but for some reason the stock hook just wasn't getting the job done with this plastic. So I decided to try and "fix" my problem, this is the end result. I tried a few different hooks before deciding to try these. I tried a regular 3X Twist Lock 5/0, a Zo Wire Twist Lock flipping hook 4/0, and this Beast 4/0.

All three worked just fine but I liked the way my larger plastics looked while rigged on the Beast. They are nice and straight with plenty of gap for the bait to collapse into. The head is the Dirty Jigs version, I can't remember it's exact name at the moment, 3/4 oz with a number 3 Owner Hyper Wire split ring and the aforementioned Beast 4/0. Hook up percentage is fantastic now.

I'm trying to show the difference between the stock Gammy hook and my replacement.

Did you cut the original off?

I pour my own and often will pour them without a hook, add a split ring, then choose the weight head and add the hook I want when I'm on the lake. I have some poured with hooks up to 7/0 for big worms though so I'm never had a problem with my plastics being too big :)

Nice, but pouring your own is cheating. I'm just joking of course. I'm sure you haven't run into much trouble using a hook as big as a 7/0. I know guys are trying all kinds of plastics on these type heads and I'm sure there are several that work super but so far the Smokin' Rooster has been one of my best. I also know this forum is very high on Rage products so that's the only reason I even bothered posting. Just in case some other guys wanted to try it I just wanted to warn them that you need a bigger hook than what usually come with them.
