My friend got me onto these. They've been around for a long time. I drag them over weeds and pads and they work well sometimes. They don't get as nearly many hits as say a Ragetail Toad but when I've caught fish they have always been over 2lbs. Sometimes right when you get to the edge of a weed bed and hit open water you'll see bass come from under the pads and out into the open water and smash this lure.
 

What's also nice is that they almost never, ever get hung up.

 

It's definitely a worthwhile lure and also not very expensive so you can afford to have a few. I'd just get 2 dark ones, one in small and one in large.

Oh yes, they are my number one pad lure and the only colors I use are black scale and bullfrog. Toads are a different deal as they are a fast moving bait while the soft hollow frogs are a slow moving bait, the moss boss is right in the middle. I like the hollow frogs for matts and spadderdock (looks like tiny lilly pads), the toads are what I like over grass beds that aren't on the surface but just below, and for pads nothing beats the moss boss. I have a great hook up percentage with it and like you, I find it to be a big fish bait, rarely do you have a bass under 14" hit it, and I'm amazed at how nobody seems to use these anymore.

You won't get as many bites, but the ones you do will be big-uns. One time I was getting misses on a Ragetail Toad, slowed it down with the Moss Boss and caught said fish.

Hook up ratio isnt as good as a frog or alike in my opinion. My grandpa threw that moss boss religiously but that was before the really good frogs started being made.

When I first started bass fishing in the early spring with awesome success when the weeds came and kind of shut my style of fishing down I explored my options. I searched for weedless lures and found plenty of them. I now carry a weedless tackle box. I didn't let the weeds beat me or discourage me. I adapted and over came the situation. Soon the pads will be so thick we could walk across them. It's weedless topwater action. I need to get a Go-Pro to capture the action.

Zeiners bass shop has the Norman weed walker II. Some of this stuff is hard to find.

One of my best days ever pike fishing was with the Moss Boss. I was tossing the frog pattern in some pencil reeds in Ontario...just straight wore them out.

I got some out of the Walmart "assorted" box for 1.50. Had a bunch of em too.

This was the first pad bait I was introduced too. I throw it religiously on small northern lakes and the bass hammer it.

I just do a straight retrieve with pauses over holes in lily pads.

I fished with a guide up in Canada who used to use one with no hook on it. He'd throw it up in to the reeds and use it to draw the pike from the heaviest cover out to the edge where his guests could catch them. It was neat to see the wakes of the big pike as they'd follow it out.
