Cleaning Guides And Rod

Featured Replies

Should I be cleaning my rod guides after every outing? I've noticed a lot of build up of dirt and crud in and around the guides and on the rod tip, especially when fishing dirtier water with vegetation.  I've been using warm water with some soap on paper towels and Q-tips, is this okay?

I know that keeping clean guides makes for longer casts and will help keep your line from becoming damaged so I want to make sure cleaning them a lot is the norm.

Thanks

I will use a qtip to clean the guides. Also shows you if you have a bad spot on your guides insert if it pulls any cotton off.

If you do have a chip can that be fixed?

Warm water and soft cloth is what I use and my rod builder suggest. The Q-tip is good but I every so often use a piece of nylon stocking to run around and thru my guides to check for crack or nick's, least wise the ones that use inserts in the guides, the recoils are wipe em, and forget em. The tip top and guides are easily replaced and very inexpensive to have fixed by any reputable rod builder. :thumbsup1:

It's always a good idea to inspect your equipment after use. Not only rod guides, but line guides on your baitcasters and bail rollers on your spinning reels can get gunked up after just one outing under the wrong conditions.  Warm, soapy water will usually do the trick.

Never hurts to check them, I never do.  I've had 2 cracked inserts on the tip guide in 10 years, 1 each on a fresh and saltwater rods.  I have replaced other guides, corrosion can be a problem here, a visual scan is all that I do.

Yes, warm water and a mild detergent are fine for rod cleaning. For stubborn stains denatured alcohol is safe. over the winter a coat of car wax and a buffing keeps thing looking good and easier to clean.

Damaged guide inserts call for replacement of the guide.
