Swimbaits in Hyrdrilla

Featured Replies

I am just curious to if anyone produces a swimbait that can be fished around hydrilla. Here in south louisiana we have many shallow flats with clear water 3 to 4 feet deep on top of hydrilla. I think a swimbait would be effective but not sure which could be thrown around cypress trees and grass.

Don't think I'd throw one with treble hooks. There are a few that can be pretty weedless. The 6" weedless huddelston, and the 3:16 Mission fish are 2 that do catch fish, the mission fish come in 3 different sizes IIRC, I usually get the 5 and 7" models. You can fish these like a regular swimbait, i.e. slow steady retrieve, or you can fish them like a jig, I've better success with the latter.

Thats what I spend most all of my time doing in summer/ fall once hydrilla gets up.  Theres plenty of swimbaits that will work. Just need a bait that sinks slow enough that it will not hang up before you start your retreive. The bait will also have to hold up to the hydrilla once a fish gets down in it. If the bait has any breakage problems (weak hooks, rings, or construction)  at all don't get it or you will lose fish on it and break the bait. Theres a ton of baits out there that will break trying to get a fish out of hydrilla.  Also look for baits that don't roll over at the surface at high speeds. Hydrilla flats can be covered better at times with fast swimbaits and all day topwater strikes are common in summer as fast as you could ever reel the swimbait.

Once the grass gets to the surface and treble hook and top hook baits are hanging up go to baits like the hollow body swimbaits, Mission fish, weedless Hudds/ Grass minnows and the Lake Fork weedless swimbaits.  I don't go to them first because of the hookup ratios are not as good but somtimes when the stuff gets thick you have no choice.

for a small swimbait I love fishing these in the grass

Most of our lakes down here in the South are covered in grass by the time the water hits the mid 70's.  Guys are fishing the Skinny Dipper and killing them .  They are fishing it both weight less and with an 1/8 oz weighted hook.
