New Spot. New Fish. Now Questions.

Our new house we had built is right near Cape Fear River NC. About 5 mins. The usual is in there LMB, warmouth, crappie. But also has huge gar. Do I need to have a leader on every time I cast now to save my line from getting bitten in two? Also, what will the gar eat? Will it hit all the usual LMB lures I throw? Is the river current a huge concern? I will be on my kayak.

Gars around here usually go after fish looking lures and baits, for me, X-raps and flukes they usually go after, but they will ignore worms. Just my experience. Just be watching for them, they usually aren't too far from shore

Don't forget to take a billy club with ya. They're a lot easier to handle after you give em a few stout whacks.

When I'm targeting gat I use frayed rope tied around a small round jig head. It can be fished a couple of ways. You don't hook the fish though. Their teeth get caught in the frayed rope. Just cut them out and retie.
