Sleepy Bass

Featured Replies

So when do bass sleep? I want to go night fishing but didn't know if they would be sleeping. Sounds crazy I know. But wondered if my lure swam by a bass (or any fish) about 11pm and it was like, nope I'm tired.

I don't believe bass "sleep", More or less they just rest and its not only at night.

They don't sleep like you sleep. Think of it as a period of inactivity designed to conserve energy.

If you've ever had a goldfish, you probably noticed periods where they were completely inactive, just relatively motionless near the bottom of their bowl. That's when they were resting. Bass are very similar.

After 45+ yrs of night fishing they bite very well at night!

So theoretically you can catch a bass at 3am that is wide awake after a nap and has the munchies. ;-)

Aint nothing theoretical about it...that is fact! :)

I like to be on the water as the sun goes down. Half an hour after sundown, I head in for a little nap and head back out a couple of hours later.  The bugs have pretty much quit biting and the bass have become comfortable with roaming.  Three rods with three baits, black spinnerbait, black Jitterbug and a big worm with a lot of tail action behind a 3/8oz. tungsten weight and glass bead. I leave the clutter at home and make sure I have strong batteries in my penlight.  I have the lake and the fish to myself and the Lord and I always have a great time.

If the fish in my aquarium sleep, so do bass.. and the fish in my aquarium do suspend/sleep when I turn out the lights..

A lot of fish hunt at night. take catfish as an example. they come up shallow to attack schools of baitfish. i've won several cat tourneys, all at night, and never further than 15 feet from the bank.

I've caught quite a few of my larger fish at night. Favorite is throwing a black buzz bait and a black spook also. Never had much action with worms at night bit normally have enough action on the other baits to keep my busy enough.

Night fishing is also great when the mid day sun is super hot. Surface temp tends to cool a few degrees from daytime temps and bass start actively feeding. Look for lights dock areas hold baitfish and even dark areas of any kind of cover.

I have caught sleeping bluegill before at night, 7-8" fish felt like a big wad of grass on my line, and this was with a 3 weight fly rod. During the day, they double it over.
