Hook Sharpening

Featured Replies

How many of you guys spend time sharpening hooks?  Does it make that much of a difference?  Im into Archery, and I know there are some guys who will take a brand new broadhead out of the package and sharpen it.  Does anyone do the same thing or just use them as they are and toss em when they get dull?

I always sharpen them.  Usually the only time I replace them is when I break off a lure, or bend a hook way out of whack.

I toss em. EWG gamakatsu hooks usually last a while when they go dull I toss em. I would like to learn to sharpen jig hooks though.

But you don't mean sharpening new out of the bag hooks do you?

I check EVERY hook before I use them.  And if they need sharpening, so be it.  Even new ones.

I'm also constantly checking my hook points while I'm fishing, and touching up as I go. I'm very diligent about that.

I sharpen my hooks when necessary. The day Glenn put out his hook sharpening video, I had purchased some of "the worlds sharpest hooks" from a walmart display. I had to sharpen two packs worth of hooks. I'm not impressed with that brand. Very impressed with the video!!

The only hooks I sharpen are the unremovable hooks of spinnerbaits, any other hook that gets dull gets the trash bin treatment.
