i want to buy a hole bunch of jigs and dont know what to buy. what heads should i focus on and what colors and what brands.

Personally I prefer *** jigs.

Head doesn't really matter as much as people think.  I have dropped finesse football head jigs in trees before and caught fish.  I usually stick to Strike King Jigs.  The Hack Attacks, the Denny Brauer Premier Pro Models, Denny Brauer Structure Jigs, the finesse football heads and I just picked up the rage blade swimming jig.

 

As far as colors, you want to match the hatch.  I have a black/blue, green pump. craw, and bluegill color with me at all times with rage tail chunks and zoom fat albert grubs in similar or matching colors.

 

Everyone on here goes nuts for the Seibert jigs but I haven't used them...yet.

I would recommend doing what I did..... Call or email Mike at Siebert outdoors, tell him about the areas you primarily fish (clarity, depth, cover and structure) as well as common forage and ask him to make some recommendations. I did that and will be taking my order out this weekend to catch some bass! I am very happy with the quality of his jigs and the prices are quite reasonable.

People really like Siebert jigs, many users here, I have seen north stars but not used them. Mike Siebert also sells Rage baits and has very nice Tungston punch rigs, as well as bullet weights (tungston) at really good prices. Call them and try a few from both company's, then you will really know better on what's, what! Good luck!

There are hundreds if not thousands of choices but I try to keep it simple. Siebert and Northstar will give you personal attention and great customer service. Talon I buy at TW.
