Looking to get some line for my reels they all are closed faced. What lb of text should I use. or should I switch to open face. I heard they were better is that true and that you could use bigger text pounds on them.

Your post doesn't make a lot of sense.  Line is measured in lb test, not text.  By close faced do you mean like a Zebco reel?  If so, those are called spincasters.  I would think 10lb would be good for them.  By open faced do you mean a baitcaster or a spinning reel?  Spinning reels are the ones with the reel on the bottom of the rod, baitcasters are on top.

berkley trilene XL (red packaging) in 8#. If you think you need it, you can go up to 10# but be aware this will limit your casting distance.

Ok, yes I think 8-10lb test would be about right for a spincast reel.  If you are serious about fishing you should look into getting a spinning reel or a baitcaster.  A baitcaster will be a more natural transition from your Zebco's but it will take some practice to get good at casting.  A spinning reel would work well too, you would have to get a new rod and get used to fishing with the reel on the bottom.

Keep the closed face for your youngsters, my younger grandkids use em and have a ball. But for any serious fishing, you really should invest in a spinning reel or a descent baitcaster, I am sure you would appreciate your fishing experience much more.

Nooo, you didn't waste you're money, if that's what you can afford or just have for now, you can catch fish with it... Of course the sky is the limit on fishing gear.... Maybe later upgrade or now... Either way... You can fish and enjoy it with you're gear. At any rate good luck & enjoy

No, I wouldn't say that.  I imagine most of us started out with Zebco combos.  They aren't the highest quality or most efficient rods and reels but they will get you fishing.  If you decide to get more serious about it in the future you can upgrade your gear then.

Down the road a spinning reel is more user friendly with better drag, and over all quality and usefulness. The spincast like you have can get away with heavier line than with a spinning reel. 10# is probably a good compromise but 12, 14 even 15 will work if cover conditions call for that.

What are you fishing for? That could help point you in a good direction. Bass? Small catfish? Bluegill/crappie/perch? Could make a difference...

What is the length/power/action of the rod that you are using?

I have a zebco 404.. just pretty much anything that I can catch.

Nothing wrong with that at all!!

You can catch most any freshwater water fish that swims with that reel / combo and do it with confidence.

Is it ideal for all larger species, no but I've been fishing for a looong time and some of the equipment I use isnt ideal for all situations either. But I own it, like it, its good enough for me.

Just go fishin and catch a big one!!
