How to make plastics?

Featured Replies

I saw a few articles on making your own worms, but anyone know any links or articles that cover plastics likes tubes? In other words hollow body plastics. Any help would be great, thanks

dangit wrong forum, sorry bout that..... can you move it ?

Go to www.lurecraft.com  I ordered their free catalog and it tells you what plastic to use for tubes.  If that doen't help then call their 1-800 number and ask them all the questions you have.  I am going to try to pour my own plastic but haven't started yet.  I also am in the process of making my own spinners and jigs.

Thanks, I've tried looking, and there is some stuff on tubes, I was hoping to find out more about hollow bodies though. Seems it's more complicated for backyard builders. Only technique I could find really was squish molding...for more complicated bodies. Think i'm gonna start with tubes first though, and get a feel for hollow bodiy stuff before going to far.

I read an online article on molding tubes somewhere, maybe I can find it when I'm at home. Basically, you want to find a rod that is closed at one end. You'll want to coat the rod with oil so it's easy to get the tube off. Then, dip the rod into the heated liquid plastic as deep as you want the length of the tube to be. Then, pull it out and cool it in water. The key is creating the right hardness/softness of plastic. It'll take some experimenting. You may need to re-dip the tube again, but the cool part about that is you can dip into a different color and that will create a "bleeding bait" effect like Strike King's tubes. The last thing you need to do after the tube is finished is cut the open end into a skirt. I believe there's an inexpensive tool you buy that does this easily at one of lure supply places like Jann's or stamina.

OR, I bet there are probably tube molds you can buy somewhere.

I'll see if I can find the article later, but I think what I said is basically all there is to it. I haven't tried making any yet, but I will later this year.

Bobo, you can do it two ways-

1- get a mold like the one available at delmart.com and literally mold them. This mold comes with an insert in the mold that makes the hollow part.

or

2- You can dip them on steel rods like I do. This is a time consuming process but I prefer it to the mold. I can change the diamter of my tubes by dipping more or less.

Either way you will need some kind of cutting tool to make the tails.

I wrote a book on pouring soft plastics and I'm working on a follow up, I haven't even begun to talk about dipping tubes in them. There is a lot to cover.
