I was wondering if anyone has any info on this reel like who made it for cabelas and so forth, I just bought a brand new one that was in the bargain cave for 23 bucks because it was missing one of the end caps on the reel handles, I know it is the older model because it has the foam handle grips any info will help, also did I make a smart purchase or did I get douped? Thanks for any help.

They're Daiwa designs.  Could you do me a favor and remove the non handle side plate and pull on the metal cylinder (inductor) on the side of the spool.  Is it fixed to the spool or does it pull out then pop back in spring loaded?  I'm trying to determine if these reel are magforce or magforce z.

The reel will work ok.  It is a tiny reel (and very light) and has some flaws but also has some potential.  Instead of tossing mine, I've decided to play with it a little bit and see what I can do to improve it.  It does not have a very strong drag but if you clean it up and run it dry it picks up enough power to be useable.  For $23 you got a reel that will work decently.  I recommend taking it apart, cleaning and relubing it if you can do that yourself.  I would not use this reel in any heavy duty applications.

 

TorqueConverter, the new Tournament ZX (Daiwa product) does not have Magforce Z.

I was told Cabelas reels are Daiwa and Plueger and mostly Plueger. Not sure if that was last year though.

I think their new Verano baitcaster is an Okuma.  Strong resemblance to the Helios from what I could see.

thanks for the info! I was planning o using it as just a soft plastics reel once I find a rod I like and ill be sure to take apart and oil the reel, the more I look at it, its reminds me of a pinnacle design, could be wring though.

Jeff H, is it confirmed or just suspected that the current ZX it is not magforce z.  That spool sure looks like it could be.

I happened to be in Cabela's tonight looking at the Zx and the Prodigy. The sales guy said they were made by Pflueger.

Were you looking at the casting reels or spinning reels?

Im pretty sure the ones from a yr or 2 ago are just like the rapala shift baitcaster.dicks also hax a version also i have a few of them .they are not bad reels at all .getting parts is the kicker.

I went back this afternoon and they definitely have the Diawa D on them. The guy I talked to last night wasn't there but the guy I talked to tonight confirmed they're made by Diawa. I had to go back and double check! I only live less than 10 minutes away so it was no big deal.

 

I don't own one yet but my initial opinion is they seem like pretty solid reels.

The Prodigy was just on sale for $69.00 not long ago.  That's a bargain for sure!  It will go on sale again, keep your eye on it.
