Making Crank Baits

Featured Replies

I would like to look into making my own crank baits. Would anyone be interested in helping me out by informing me where to look for the materials and books on making lures. :-/ Thank you men

for books, the book "the complete guide totacklemaking" by c. Boyd Pfeiffer is good, not great but good.  It'll provide you with a number of beginning hints with a number of topics for making just about any kind of lure you can imagine, and also info about some tools and what not.  perty good buy.

Thank you, I've noticed that whittler makes some pretty awesome lures. Wouldn't mind getting some instructions from that young man. :-?

Thomas there are a couple really good websites, Tackleunderground and Stripers online are two of the best. If your local library has Pfeiffer's book check it out, not a bad book but the section on crankbaits is small. Be glad to help any way I can. PM me. I have a couple tutorials here, they are very basic, but a start.

That's quite a standard you set there Whittler,

Went out today a purchased a curving knife and block of bass wood.  :) Now where do I start. :-/ Sure like the look of the lure. What size is it and what size block would I start with? I'll have to set up a e-mail at my daughters house for a while, untill I move to a new location. Then I'll PM you. So Teach, where do I start.

Thomas, best advise I can give is to make the cut for the lip slot and drill for the hardware and weght while the block is still square. It is really tough to get the slot cut once you have rounded over the bait.

Lay out your pattern on the block, mark a centerline and always work from the centerline. The first few you will most likley make some kindling but it gets better with each one you make.
