Reel Is Screaming, Should I Be Concerned?

Featured Replies

I recently upgraded the bearings (hawgtech) in my 200g7 and 50e. Both have had noticeable distance gains, yet the 200g screams while 50e is nearly silent. I do run braid on the g while flouro on the e, is it just the braid or should I be concerned? Another point that I'm ashamed to say is that when I changed the bearings I dropped one of the ABEC-7s and could Have gotten it confused with one of the stock bearings.... Would there be any way to tell? Any input will help, and thanks as always! Glad to know there is a large community of people that love fishing as much as I do.... And as usual I wish everyone tight lines

Clean and LIGHTLY oil the brake race and see if that helps. When I say lightly I mean put 3-⁴ drops on the tip of a cotton swab and run it around the race a couple times after u clean it with alcohol.

If it's a ceramic bearing there should be some sort of printing along the outside edge of the bearing.

There's probably not any printing on the stock bearing.

A spin test should tell you right away if they are that much better than the stock one. As for the noise, centrifugal brake noise is often mistaken for bearing noise. Check the pins that the brake blocks ride on to be sure one has not come loose and rubbing on the drum. If the blocks are good and the drum is clean and smooth oiling is optional.

Vbs ? Noisy? Maybe, I never had one in scream at me in 15 years... The new SVS is noted for noise, on ceramics, they are always noisy, stainless balls are quiet unless rusted or bad, I can't believe you have ceramics that are so quite you can't hear them!

I'd download Shimanos baitcast reel maintenance guide off their website. According to Shimano, the brake PINS and BRAKE RACE should be light oiled. But hey they just make the reel so...
