I've been having a bit of trouble with a new Lews reel I bought in regards to braid, It handles other lines like a champ, but I cannot get the braid to grip on the reel, it slips under pressure, even when I slapped on a welding glove and tried to crank the line in under pressure. Should I reline the reel and use a starter of mono or fluoro to have the reel grab it, and then tie the braid on after a few revolutions? 

 

Any suggestions welcome - hopefully I didn't miss a topic with the answer to this already - if so mods feel free to delete my thread

You did spool monofilament backing before spooling the braid ?

Gotta either wrap the spool in some electrical tape, or back it up with some cheap mono. The braid needs something to bite onto.

Or if the Lews reel you bought has holes in the spool you can run it through them and tie it.

I would put a mono backing on first and then spool up your braid.    Depending on what size braid your fishing I try and get about 100-125yrds on each reel and fill my backing acordingly so the reel is full.  Never have a problem with it slipping.  If you want a full spool, well you're gonna have to put some tape, electrical or some kind of adhesive tape to give the braid something to grip.

You need backing line.

And further more..... if you got a 200yd spool of braid- you should do two reels with it. Why waste it on one reel? It lasts forever. Just put 100yds each over some filler mono.

Idk. ...I guess I only use braid on a few things that I don't tie/retie a whole lot. Ymmv.
