7' Jig And Frog Rod

Featured Replies

Looking for suggestions for a 7' jig and frog rod. Open to any brands and price range is up to around $220. Thanks for any suggestions you guys have! Probably pair it up with a Tatula reel.

I really like the 7'H Kistler KLX rod for those techniques. Very good backbone, sensitive, and very light at around only 4oz. If you can wait for a sale, the 7'1H 13 *** is a great choice as well.

I haven't been able to fish with it yet, but today I threw a Tatula Type R on a Powell Endurance 714 with 65lb 832 for those exact applications.

St Croix 7' MHF Avid is what I use, some say it is rated a little lighter than what it actually is and think it is close to a HF. usually can be found around $190.00 new, Made in the USA and is backed by the best CS in the industry w/ a Liftime Warranty!.

For the first time I used my jig rod for a frog rod this past weekend, I would suggest something with a fast tip and not an Xtra Fast tip. Thats the only complaint I had about using it as a dual purpose rod. I was using a 7'2 MH XF Crucial, which I love for jigs, just not the right action for a frog for me. Hope this helps.

Seconded regarding the Kistler (a U.S. company that I don't think gets enough love honestly), haven't tried the 13 *** but it seems a ton of people like them.

I've got the 7' Kistler jig & frog rod.  I think it is a good rod.  I paid way less than $220 for it, but that was several years ago, Kistler was being closed out at the KCK Cabelas.  $220 will get you a top of the line St Croix, won't it?  Outside of a top of the line Loomis, you've got a bunch of brands to choose from.  Go to the tackle store and start trying them out.  I don't know about you, but I can't buy a rod from a catalog unless I'm buying a known commodity, i.e. a copy of one I've already got.   I've got to touch it and feel it prior to buying it.

Top of the line St Croix is about $380.

I have two of the Avid 7' MHF rods. I found the 2nd one on sale at Gander Mountain so I couldn't pass it up. These rods are plenty powerful for pulling bass out of  cover. I highly recommend them.

7'1" MH or H *** or ***, depending on weights and cover.

Right now I'm using an ALX deputy (7'1" mh). It does the job well, and objectively speaking it is a great rod, but it doesn't have "it" for me.

I have a custom Deputy and Dragger. I think the Dragger feels better for jigs. The Deputy does some things really well, but I agree it doesn't have "it."
