Old Silstar Baitcaster Trouble

Featured Replies

I have an old silstar that has sentimental value to me. I recently cleaned the reel and after outing it back together the gears slip bad. I've since taken it apart several times. It cast great. Also before I put it on a rod there is no slipping or grinding. What do I need to look for.

There's really no way to tell without seeing it. The gears do not disengage from one another so they can't slip per say. Something else is wrong. Rule #1 of reel service: have a schematic in hand before opening any reel

Bet the engagement slots in the pinion have rounded off, and the yoke springs have compressed some. Found these 2 things in all the old Silstar' we serviced in the 90's.

Try a different rod! :eyebrows:   Just kidding.  That is an old reel!  Find a nice place on a shelf and retire it.
