Clear Water Jigs

Featured Replies

I'm pretty sure I know the answer but here it is. I fish some large ponds/small lakes that are very clear. I've had succsess with bitsy flip jigs and 12 lb mono. What line would you guys be using? Also any jig or trailor ideas. Thanks.

8-10 lb fluoro depending on cover. Possibly braid with leader.

1/4 oz Siebert Tournament Swim jig with a Paca Chunk is my jig and trailer idea. Color is up to you.

Clear water I usually try more natural looking things and downsize them.  Rage Tail baby craw's and bitsy bugs.  I'd also go with the 12lb flouro.

How is 10 lb floro on baitcasting gear? And I do catch fish north of 8 lbs occasionally. Is 10 lb enough?

It works well. I think if 12 lb mono is doing the job now, 10 lb fluoro *should* be fine.

Depends on a multitude of factors, quality of the line, cover or obstructions for the fish to run through, if you have you drag set properly, if you've properly tied your knot, etc. All in all a good quality 10# fluoro is pretty strong stuff but I'll have to admit I'd be pretty nervous myself if I knew there was a chance of a fish of that size on 10# line, ha ha ha. Also there's absolutely nothing wrong with fishing smaller jigs in clear water, I do it all the time and catch fish just fine.

Also 10# fluoro is where I was going to suggest you start even before you informed us about the quality of the fish so you may even want to go up to 12 just to have a little extra "cushion" so to speak. My favorite is P-Line 100% Fluorocarbon.

Personally- I'd try 12# yo zuri hybrid. Maybe even 10#.

I use 10lb Sunline Super on a lake with lots of docks and big, spooky fish. You get broke off sometimes but when that happens it's usually in a situation when I don't think it would have mattered if it was 10 or 25, they just got me in a bad spot.

Thanks blue! So most of you guys run strait floro with no braid main line?

I throw 10-15lb fluoro with a TNT baits football jig in brown or the m80 spotted bass jig in spec ops.

No 99% of the time these days I'm fishing with braid, I add leaders as needed. I only had 2 set ups that I wasn't using braid with; my crankbait rod and my umbrella rig rod. Just today I picked up some 65# S8S for my umbrella rig so now I'm down to just the single outfit without braid.

I'm much more comfortable with braid than I am with anything else. Especially on spinning tackle.

When i fish ponds, I usually use a 1/4 oz SK Bitsy Flip with Zoom Super Chunk Jr. or SK Baby Rage Craw (depending on what the mood the fish are in), fished on 12# Seaguar Flouro. Its a money combination for me in my area.
