Using Lures As A Drop Shot Weight.

Featured Replies

So recently I finally started fishing the drop shot. I've been doing very well with it. It's definitely my new favorite rig. Sunday I was catching a few fish on it. Using a VMC drop shot hook with the swivels on the hook with a KVD Dream Shot. I decided to try using a Texas Rigged Senko pegged with a bullet weight as the weight on the rig and started slaying them. Found a hump in about 15 feet of water and it was covered in fish. Big and small. So what else have you guys used as a drop shot weight?

I've posted this before, but I think it's a valid assumption. The two presentations you cite require two different hook-sets. How do you know which is which when you feel the fish on? I believe you might be disappointed with this approach. But what the heck....give it a whirl. :)

I remember years ago... Seeing a Jig with line tied to the bend of the hook... With a tube tied on or a plastic worm, it was interesting for a minute.

Never used it...

Well usually when I hook a fish on the drop shot bait it hooks itself. I feel a tap and just pull tight on it and the fish is on.  The ones I caught on the worm were just the same as any other worm hookset. Felt a tap tap, reeled down and set the hook. I actually thought the same thing before using it but it wound up working great.

I also used a jighead and grub for the weight too.

Worked great. For some reason though they rarely hit the bottom lure. I mean ive caught them on the bottom one but like 90% of my catches come on the drop shot bait. Whats weirder is Sunday I was fishing that drop shot with a normal weight a caught a fish here and there but when I changed the weight out for a texas rigged Senko I started slaying them. Same spot. I wonder if maybe it looks like a baitfish running from a predator and triggers the bass to strike. I use 10lb test for the main line and I up the leader to 12-14lb.

This sounds like a great idea. If you were to use a senko as the weight would you need to peg a weight above it or would you be able to use it weightless?

A1/8 oz head and a bitsy tube works well as a DS weight.

Weightless wouldn't work well I don't think. A Senko by itself isn't enough weight to get you on the bottom and stay there.

I'm definitely trying this tonight.
