Painting wood plugs

Featured Replies

Greetings,

I have attempted my first 3 plugs, painting them with an airbrush and Createx Acrylic paints. Second coats seem to wash off easy, which is one problem.

'The paint seems almost soft and not completly hard, possably due to the wrong sealer.

How do you paint the scale pattern. I bought wedding veil and the paint always seems to run.pool and smear.

I have more questions, please lets start with these. Hopefully the great Whittler will also share his insights on this as well.

Thanks much,

let ur paint dry longer and they should not have that soft feel. also when paint with the fish scale stencil try and hold your brush farther away so it wont smear

dmold,

Well lets look at this thing step at a time from the bottom up.

What type wood are you using

What kind of sealer

What primer

Once Createx dries it is waterproof and should not wipe off with a damp cloth. Using a water based paint it is a good idea to use a waterbased sealer, some solvent based sealers can be used but it must be completely cured before paint is applied or you will get a reaction. It sounds like you are spraying the paint too heavy through the veil or the veil is not resting tight against the bait when spraying. One thing you can always sand and start over, there is a learning curve or dues that must be paid in frustration, but once you learn what each paint does and how much pressure to spray with each type and color paint it just gets better.

Looking really stupid standing in line at the fabric store waiting for your wedding veil to be cut, well thats just something us baitmakers have to deal with.

Any more questions just fire away, cause I'll bet together we can solve this.

Ok, now we make progress.

The wood I'm useing on these first 3 are Bass wood and Soft Maple.

The sealer was a Minwax water based acrylic.

I didn't use a primer as I thougt the sealer would be enough.

So regarding the veil,

It is tightly wraped around the lure body?

The fabric is so skimpy and the paint just smears.

What kind of device do you use to hold the lure?

If the pattern is dark lines then how can a light green or gold skin color possably cover the dark under coating with a single light spray that is so light it doesn't pool?

I will check back this evening, thanks for the help,

dmold

dmold,

The Minwax is one of the sealers I use, just make sure after applying it to give it 24hrs. to dry. When using Minwax I wipe on a light coat, let dry, then sand with a 150 grit foam pad then wipe on a second coat. when the second coat has cured light sand again and spray on a basecoat of Createx opaque white as a primer. Your ready to paint.

When spraying through the veil cut back your pressure and use a very light spray it does not require much paint. If your shooting a light color over a dark color do it in a couple steps, spray a very light coat then dry with a hair dryer and shoot the second coat.

I use several different fixtures to hold my baits, all are mounted on 3/8" dowels. A stainless screw eye, clothes pin or office clip if I'm attaching to the lip. All these fit 3/8" holes in my drying wheel and my holding fixtures. I have enclosed a picture of my drying wheel and you can see some of the holding fixtures are made.
