Combo Question?

Featured Replies

Just read that if you purchase a PQ/Carbonlite combo you will not be getting the same grade or quality reel if you were to purchase it separate. They basically were saying that the reel is made of cheaper components thus allowing them to sell it for much cheaper in the combo than sold separate. Do you guy's feel this is true? I love my PQ and Carbonlite rod but I purchased them separate.

Anything's possible nowadays, but I highly doubt BPS would undermine themselves by selling an inferior reel under the same label as another. They can sell combos cheaper for two reasons: the mark up on individual components allows it, and retailers commonly use loss-leaders to generate foot traffic. Under this scenario, they may well be breaking even or even loosing money on that combo and making it up on ancillary sales.

I appreciate the information. I have multiple BPS Carbonlite/PQ setups that I love and was going to get another one but I have always purchased it separate and reading that kinda made me wonder about purchasing it together.

You have to look very closely at the model name of the reel. BPS has in the past sold a combo during sale events that looked and sounded like the Pro Qualifier reel with a Carbonlight rod, for very low price. But the reel itself was slightly different then the Pro Qual with a slightly different name. I also believe another distinguished factor was the "imposter" reel was made in China and not Korea.

No, the components are the same. At BPS, during their sale events they will often times have combos in the store that are similar but have cheaper components. For an example, at one time they had some sort of PQ combo that was being sold for slightly more than the rod. The reel used the same body components as the PQ reel, but didn't have as many bearings and was painted a different color. Those were in-store only purchases. If you order the combo's from the catalog or online  the PQ combo or Carbonlight combo it's exactly the same products as buying them separate.
