Need A New Reel!! Maybe A Rod?

Featured Replies

I have a revo stx I got at bass pro this summer paired with a mojo bass mhf 6'6. My reel bit the dust today I have to get it sent in to get a bunch of stuff fixed... So I need a new rod and reel to get me by and now is a great time to start into the rest of my arsenal. So my questions are, what rod and reel would compliment what I have?

I fish all sorts of techniques, but primarily crank baits, frogs and soft plastics

What do you reccomend? I don't really have a price range but would like to keep it reasonable ;)

Around 150 you can get a Tournament Pro or a Curado if you look hard enough. The rod is pretty much subjective.

For the reel, get a Tatula. Killer deals to be had on a killer reel. The Curado I is a good choice as well.

I might be thinking about a micro magic rod, maybe 7'something? Another mhf?

Look on e bay.... $109 for a 7 ft MH

Shimano Curado I series, 6:1. Perfect all around reel. Retails for $179.

As for rods around the $100 mark, Fenwick HMG, St. Croix, Premier.

Duckett micro magic is a great rod and very sensitive.

As is the reel selection.  :teeth:

Are you fishing from the bank or a boat?  Shorter is often better for bank fishing if there are any obstructions nearby.  I've used MF for crankbaits with no problem, but wouldn't consider it for frogs.  A MH minimum would be best for the other 2 techniques, but not too good for crankbaits.  You definitely need two types of rods in IMHO.

A budget would be nice to know.  The Tatula is still a hot ticket.  I'd check with Ron at Beat the Big Box Boys first since he is a sponsor of this forum.  Especially if you want a rod to go with the new reel.  Calling is always best.  TW still has the T3 1016 for less than $200 or a Zillion for less than $240.  Depends on how much you are willing to spend.  If I can't buy on closeout or a big sale, I buy used.

Tons of good rods for the money....again depending on budget.  A Berkley Lightning is nice.  An NRX even better.  Or we could get into JDM products.  :teeth:

Well I want a mid / higher end reel. I hear a lot about tatula, currado etc I'm looking that price range up to around chronarch ci4 territory maaaaaybe a little higher.

I'm pretty set on a 7'ish micro magic mh unless someone can kick me off that horse

But I love my revo stx and wonder if I should stay with abu or branch elsewhere. After seeing how many defects in Abu reels brand new in the box I question staying with them. I just got back from bass pro and 2/3 of the stx in the store had a problem brand new out of the box

If they had defects brand new I would stray away from Abu from now. Plenty of other good choices.

Unless you just wanna splurge, the $200 price point is the sweet spot I feel. The Curado I and Tatula will serve you just as well as a $300 reel would.
