Bearing Flush/supertune Questions

Featured Replies

I just bought a dremel and want to learn how to supertune my reels.  Does anyone flush bearings by spinning them on a dremel in acetone?  Would this work with shielded bearings?  I've read about polishing the gear teeth and pinion with soft wheel brushes which are used for jewelry.  Do you think there is any benefit to this?

Here is a comprehensive article on super tuning.

Before you start using any abrasives on your reels just consider that the factory tolerances are extremely close and altering them can affect reel performance.  Also consider whether polishing a component used only for retrieve and not casting is going to make a difference to you ie., drag metal surfaces.  It is amazing what just keeping casting components cleaned and/or properly lubed will do for casting performance.

Repeated soaking is sufficient. IMO the potential for an accident mixing an aromatic solvent with high rpm tools isn't worth it. Care with abrasives is required but Polishing needs to be done in stages. Polish alone won't give the best results.
