Good All Around Rod

Featured Replies

Hey guys I just got a mh/f 7ft imx rod. I love the rod style, weight and sensitivity of it and I am gonna be using swimjigs, topwater, chatter, buzzbaits and lipless cranks. The only lure im not sure would be great on would be a topwater but, I have another rod anyways that would be ideal for topwaters.I really think the mh power is ideal for me since theres lots of cover and grass around in my lake plus some fairly good sized large and smalls. I have a 7:4:1 reel. So the rod has a good enough tip to drive a single hook through and can work baits fairly well. The rod handles the lipless really well and my arm no longer gets tired trying to rip and keep my crank above the grass. The reel will also help with the crank staying above the grass , get my fish back to shore quickly with those long cats and pick up slack line from working baits. So I just kind of wanted to bounce my idea and thought process of my setup with you guys and wanted to see if there was any major flaws in my thinking. I dont want to buy tech specific rods really but I do want a good all around rod/reel. Any advice or thoughts are appreciated.

Doesn't sound flawed to me, pretty versatile rig.

Should work for your needs fine

Hey catch what do you think about topwaters on this setup? I tossed my first hula popper the other day and got a bite in the first 30 seconds but, about 5 feet from shore he popped off. I wasnt sure if I was way to aggressive with the rod or the tip was too stiff for it. I suppose the drag could be let down a bit to make up for a somewhat stiffer tip then most topwaters are thrown with.

It should work fine, I throw a lot of top waters on fast action rods because IMO it makes it easier to work them.

You can't catch them all and that fish may have just been a fluke, just make sure your drag is set correctly and your good to go!

EDIT: BTW I don't think you need to swing for the fences when using treble hooks lures like hula poppers, just make sure you give it a good firm hookset.
