I need some advice on how to wire tie a jig skirt.

I've been working on a bassin' jig that's made of bucktail and silicone.  It's about 60% bucktail with around 25 strands of silicone skirt material tied over the top of the bucktail.

Currently, I'm tying in the bucktail with thread and then laying the silicone over the top of the bucktail and wrapping that with the same thread.  That is working OK but I've heard that wire tying silicone is the way to go.  So what I'd like to do is tie in the bucktail, whip finish, and glue.   Then, wire tie the silicone over the top of that.  My problem is that I've never wire tied anything in my life.  I've Googled wire tying jigs but haven't found much.  Any links or advice on tools, materials, and techniques would be great.  Thanks

the way you are doing it with the thread for bucktail is the way I would do it too.

Do a search for wire tie.  I think Harshman asked this question.  Jigman posted up how to's on it and what is needed.

I do some wire ties on finesse jigs. Get you some ultra fine wire( I got mine at BPS) pull out a strand about 7-8 inches long, while holding one end stationary wrap the other end around the jig snug but not tight enough to cut through the silicone. It usually takes me 3-4 wraps to get something I am comfortable with. then simply twist the two together and cut approx. 1/8 inch from bait. I have yet to have one slip or come undone.

A good wrap is all you need, the wire wil just add an unnecessary layer to the jig. Properly tied and sealed thread will look better and last just as long as any wire!

harshman is correct, though, the key is to not cut the strands with the wire if you go this route For wire, look in the hardware section of your big box mart, I got a roll of fine wire there, and it's lasted over 200 jigs already, getting kind of thin though on the spool
