Shallow Cold Water Lilys

Featured Replies

Found a shallow pond with green pads on about half the lake. Didn't get any bites from the pads. What strategy would yall suggest? I was working swim jig through which often pulled to surface by pads. Also tried a frog but I wasn't confident doing so and switched. Drop a jig in and let it sit? Try to pull a wakebait through gaps? Hard to maintain bottom contact with all the pads.

#1 what was the water temp? #2 What was the water depth of the lily pads?

Fishing from shore...Hard to say. High 40s at lowest and maybe 4 or 5 at deepest. Average probably 2 feet.

That water temp, I would probably pass on the lilies and look or deeper water and structure.  You may find a fish in there if you have a few days in the 70's with lots of sun since the lilies will absorb some of the heat and the fish can pull up under them in the afternoon, but the bass are probably gonna be looking for the warmest water they can find and odds are its deeper then the lilies are growing.

What Catt said if you're gonna cast into them.

I like to throw a spook, or work a pop r first along the outer edges.

If nothing then a sq bill, followed by a jig.

Yelp, like any other type if grass, start on the edge & work inward!

i have caught some bass in lilly stalks, the tops had since died and floated away, in that type of temperature water before and it was on the edges where i was working a jig about as slow as i could...the one fish ended up being the best fish i caught that year, on new year's day no less lol

May go after work. Was thinking a 1/8oz shaky and roboworm. Weightless trig may not get under the pads.
