Jig Weight Question

Featured Replies

So I was reorganizing my jig box this morning (I like to keep a row of 3/8, 1/2, a split row of 5/8 & 3/4, then the last is a mix of smaller and then 1oz).  I figured over the last year some probably got put in the wrong spot - no big deal.  So I started weighing them and got all sorts of weird weights.  I remember buying a certain jig as a 3/8oz or .375oz and it would come up at .46 or something.

So my question is that when a manufacturer sells a 3/8oz jig are they referring to the weight of the jig head itself? Not considering the skirt, rattle, or whatever the case that it comes with.  Is this so when/if I put a new skirt on the jig is still a 3/8oz head?

I know this seems like a silly question but I was never aware and am now curious.

The jig weight will be the weight of the head alone. Skirt material, weedguard, paint, rattles, all of it is going to effect the weight of the jig.

The weight of a jig is the head, that is why you hear guys ask what weight jig can a medium power rod handle and the answer is mostly 3/8oz because with the skirt and all it is closer to 1/2oz.

Ok, I kind of figured that based on what I went through today, but wanted to make sure.

Thanks for the clarification.
