How To Properly Retrieve Crankbaits For Crappie?

Featured Replies

As you all know, im alresdy decently versed in bass assassin/ panfish assassin jigs, and have had reasonable luck with that. Now I am going to try expanding my arsenal a bit and try a crankbait.

What is a proper Re retrieve for a crappie crankbait? Its nt designed for deepwater so I figure 4-10 feet is what it will run. do I reel a little thrn stop, reelnmoderately fast, or rather fast? Or do I give It a little twitch as I retrieve it?

Of course if I manage a bass in the process, that'll do just fine ;)

I like little x-raps for them too, long pauses. With cranks just a steady retrieve at different speeds until you find what they want. I have not caught many crappies at all on cranks except in the summer.

Best thing to do is get a pack of 1.5" charlie brewer slider grubs in junebug, black, or watermelon with a chartreuse tail, and rig them on a 1/32-1/16oz jighead, reel it a slowwwwwww as you can. Or rig float-n-fly style with a small straight tailed plastic of some sort, just pull it 2 feet, let it fall, repeat...<---This will catch lots of bass too in cold water.

My best success with cranks for crappie has been trolling them slowly. Shad raps in the #5 or #7 size and 200 or 300 series bandits are my favorites.

May not be a great idea for me then. Im strictly s shore fisherman. Cant afford a boat.

Rebel teeny wee-r and 1.5" rebel floater are good cranks from shore when fish are shallow. Pre-spawn crappie and bass tear them up

Awesome. Sounds like I may have a shot after all, but may have to wait till the seasons chsnge and it warms back up again before I try the crank. Im nust looking to expand my arsenal, if I fail at everything else I d have a good fallback with the 1.5inch panfish assassin jigs. I said in another ppst I thought thst perhaps fishing with certain tackle, lures, and for specific fish was something that one is either good at or they are not, and thst no amount of practice would change that. But I got to thinking and said to myself, well one dang sure wont get better if they dont at least try, so im gonna try.

When I'm a fishing for bass with cranks, I like to change up my retrieve a lot until I figure out what they're interested in that day. And I've caught a lot of crappie accidentally while doing this. So that would also be my approach if I was targeting crappie with them.

Gonna givr it a shot today, might be the wrong time of year, but sure wont cstch anything on it if I dont even throw it out there right? It is on an ultralight setup, so crappie probably will be my main target, but crankbaits being so versatile can also obviously be used for bass as well, and it certainly isnt out of the realm of possibility to run into a bass while I fish for crappie. Honestly I guess ill consider both of em my target species for this trip. Pretty much do anyway with my panfish jigs, but yeah.

That's my approach when I'm fishing small lures like a roadrunner or beetle spin. I just go for whatever bites. Catch plenty of crappie, bluegill and even nice bass on them.
