Hey there people I was wondering if someone could help me, So i want to get into swimbait fishing starting with 1-3 oz small swimbaits, I was wondering what is a good rod for small swimbait fishing. I have a Daiwa Tatula reel with #40 braid not looking to buy a whole setup just a new rod because im saving for a new car so i don't have much to spend. Thank You In Advance.

The tatula will work fine but I would get copoly or mono for line and as for a rod that all depends on what you want to spend.

Better get a more appropiate rod, you will very soon end up with bigger baits ( that can cast those smallish swimbaits ) better spend once than twice.

If you do use braid you better not backlash or you might send your expensive swimbait flying into the next timezone...

What pound test and line would you use?

Well at that price range I would say maybe a Diawa dx. I have not heard anything bad about them. Other popular rods are around 150 or more. Lots of people like the okumas and irods are not a bad buy either. Also as Raul said and I have basically told everyone who makes these 3oz max threads. Don't sell your self short on the rodand chances are you will want to go heavier. You can always throw lighter but not really heavier when your talking about big baits.

Check out the Ardent Denny Brauer swimbait rod.  I throw an S-waver with it.

I'm surprised no one every says this, but go check out the flea market on this forum, i was looking for a swimbait rod a few months ago and I found two almost right way.

What pound test and line would you use?

I don't fish heavy swimbaits but I can tell you even with lures 1/2oz-1oz if you backlash with braid and your line suddenly stops it can snap and send your lure to oblivion, I've had it happen to 50lb braid with a KVD 2.5 so it can certainly happen to a 1-3oz swimbait and 40lb braid

That would be a cheap way to get started. For me drag wouldn't matter though. Unless I hook a monster cat nothing is taking my drag on a swimbaiting reel.

I just do it for any used reel.
