We all make decisions as we travel through life. Some are good and some are bad.

 

I grew up with alcohol and great times in New Orleans, the French Quarter and at LSU. I swore off the booze when I crawled from the Officers Club to my BOQ at Fort Meade back in the 60's before I went to Viet Nam.

 

Colin Moore was a 20-year student at Virginia Tech. His father is a VMI graduate who was our American Legion Post commander. His father is straight as an arrow and has a very good career at Philip Morris.

 

Colin was on his high school's two time state championship volleyball team; was active in the Boy Scouts; loved the outdoors; and was an all around great kid.

 

This weekend Colin drank too much, passed out, and asphyxiated on his vomit.

 

He will be 20-years old forever.

 

The funeral is this Saturday. 

 

I know how to have a fun time. I have had many "good times" in my life.

 

And I want all of you guys, young and old, to have many "good times."

 

But please be careful. Drinking too much makes you look like a fool.

 

And dying at a young age is unacceptable.

 

So when you take that second, third or fourth beer; try hard liquor; or some sort of illegal drug, please remember Colin.

 

You screw up and we will be hearing about your funeral.

 

And that is the last thing we want to read about.

Great post, and good looking out. I'm sorry to hear about Colin. It's a lesson that most forget until it hits close to home.

My little brother had a very close friend that wrecked with driving intoxicated. Hit a culvert at 65 and flipped several times. Truck burst into flames and my brother and his friends had to listen to him die and do nothing.

As mortifying as that was, what bothered me the most, was after his funeral my brother and all his friends had a party to honor him. I've never seen so much alcohol...

Some lessons are never learned.

My uncle was driving a 4-wheeler drunk off his butt and flipped it, chopped his ring finger clean off...

Thats not comparable to losing your life but it could have easily been a tragic accident...

Sorry to hear about that Sam. It's terrible how many people lose their lives due to their actions or the actions of others who are under the influence of alcohol every year but very little is ever done about it. 

Living in a small town with a college, I get to read about these young folks whose party lifestyle turns ugly and quite often deadly.  Just last year there was a student who staggered away from a party in the middle of winter.  Passed out in a snow bank, they didn't find him until the next morning.  Somehow still alive but frost bite took a bunch of finger and toes.  A number of years ago a drunken young gal climbed into the upper bunk and promptly rolled out, through an open window, and fell three stories to her death.

 

On the bright side, I see on the news this morning that Johnny Football put himself into rehab.  Maybe he'll be able to post as many tweets about the dangers of the party life as he did about how much fun it was!
