Changing the guides on my 7'6 L&T

Featured Replies

Hi everybody,

Any rod builder/customer out there ! 8-)

I'm willing to have the guides on my old trusty flippin' L&T changed !

I have other flippin' sticks, but for some reason I really love this Daiwa L&T.... Love it for light flipping!

But I just never liked the guides ! I wish they were SIC, lower and lighter, plus I would like to have one more.

I have zero experience with rod building ? Do you think this is feasable ? If yes, where can I find a replacement set (SIC guides, even titanium, why not ).

I would like to have the first guide (above the reel) closer to the reel.

Do you think it will break the action ? I know guide placement is crucial ...

I know it's a lot of work for a normal not-too-fancy rod, but I really love that flippin' stick.

Thank you very much,

TL

As a builder I wouldn't recommend it, unless money is no object to you.

To change that rods guide spacing, adding different style guides, plus one more, you will more than likely mess that rods action all up.

To purchase those guides could run you from $5 to $10 for just the tip top then running back towards the reel face, could run upwards of $10 to $15 each guide this doesn't include the wrapping and finishing of each guide (usually runs $10per guide).

The key here will be if you have a gloss coated blank and remove the guides to re-space them, you will most likely have to re-gloss the blank in the old areas the guides originally sat.

A lot more work then you think....

Just my .02¢

Good Luck......

Thanks for your 2 cents Reelmechanic. Really nice of you ! 8-)

I love that rod's action just don't like the guides sitting that high, would have prefered lower SIC guide but hey seeing the costs you're describing, I guess I'll stick to the flippin' stick as it is  :D

Maybe it would be easier to just find the blank.... who makes daiwa blanks ?

Thx again

MaxDal,

OK well lets see here. The reason the guides sit so high is to keep the line off of the blank when the rod is under fighting load. If you put a lower profile guide up in place of the originals, you would probably have to add a couple more to compensate for the differences in the height. This is all to keep the line from slapping the blank under fighting load..

As far as who makes what blanks, that is a good question, you might hear that someone makes the blanks for Daiwa®, but the truth be known, nobody knows for sure who makes what for whom in the factory build arena.

Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!
